From 1999 to 2009, I lived in NYC and became a member of PGOGNY (Puppetry Guild of Greater New York) writing dozens of reviews of puppet performances for publication in the guild’s newsletters, the Puppeteers of America’s “The Puppetry Journal” and UNIMA-USA’s “Puppetry International.”
Puppet performances are often given short shift by many commercial theater reviewers who are oftentimes unfamiliar with puppetry as a theatrical art form. Because of my extensive background in puppetry I treat performances in my reviews with respect and give an honest evaluation of the performers’ intents.
Even though my reviews were written some time ago, I feel they are still relevant today, serving as a model for evaluating shows and as discussion starters for future work.
Treating puppet performances and performers with respect – Wow, that is refreshing!
